The Housemaid: A Masterclass in Global Experiential Storytelling

To help support the launch of The Housemaid we built a ‘campaign in a box’ that allowed our audience to step into Millie’s claustrophobic attic… and into Nina’s pristine nightmare!


OVERVIEW


To support the international theatrical release of the psychological thriller The Housemaid, Blacklist partnered with Lionsgate to solve a complex global challenge: how do you deliver a high-end, atmospheric fan experience that scales effortlessly from a boutique cinema in Portugal to a massive mall in Mexico?


Our solution was The Housemaid Global Pop-Up Experience Toolkit—a comprehensive, turnkey production guide that empowered local teams across 8 countries to bring the film’s tense world to life with absolute brand consistency.




The ASSIGNMENT


Lionsgate needed a physical marketing activation that was deeply engaging but flexible enough to accommodate varying budgets and spatial constraints across international territories like Argentina, Canada, and Peru.


The goal was to:


  • Design an immersive experience that captures the film’s central conflict without revealing spoilers.

  • Develop a scalable “turnkey” solution that local teams could execute flawlessly.

  • Generate viral social buzz by creating a "must-share" interactive moment for both fans of the best-selling book and new audiences.

The Blueprint: Designing Duality


Our creative strategy was built on contrast, mirroring the psychological tension of the film. We conceptualised an experience that physically placed visitors at the heart of the narrative conflict.


  • A Tale of Two Rooms: A side-by-side installation contrasting the two lead characters' environments: Nina’s pristine, luxurious bedroom versus Millie’s sparse, claustrophobic attic room with its signature A-frame roof.

  • The Threshold: In larger activations, fans entered through a giant Keyhole Tunnel, literally stepping "through the looking glass" into the mystery.

  • Total Brand Control: We provided every single asset from print-ready wall art and detailed prop lists to official Pantone colour guides, ensuring the experience felt premium in every market.










Behind Closed Doors: The Toolkit


We produced a meticulously detailed digital toolkit that enabled production teams worldwide to build the investigation with confidence.

  • Authentic Audio: We scripted and produced conflicting monologues recorded by stars Amanda Seyfried and Sydney Sweeney, creating an authentic audio-narrative layer.

  • The Scavenger Hunt: This wasn't just a display; it was a crime scene. Fans opened drawers to find Nina's pill bottles, discovered the hidden skeleton key, and explored story-critical props like Cece's ominous drawings.

The Interrogation: The journey ended with a QR code-driven "Who Do You Believe?" voting system, turning passive visitors into active participants in the film's central debate.


The Verdict: Fan Obsession


The result was a coordinated global takeover that fueled genuine fan obsession.

  • Viral Creativity: The campaign inspired deep engagement, including an intricate, viral "Housemaid Dollhouse" replica of our set.

  • Box Office Impact: The buzz translated to ticket sales, contributing to "Sold Out" screenings and over 100,000 spectators in key regions during the launch window.

  • Influencer Approved: Top-tier influencers and press shared unboxing moments and tour walkthroughs, reaching over 23.4 million followers and driving lines around the block at cinemas.

  • Global Scalability: Successfully activated in 8 major markets , including Mexico, Portugal, and Argentina, with a single toolkit.

  • Efficiency: The "campaign-in-a-box" model allowed Lionsgate to roll out a world-class experiential campaign with minimal friction.


Fan Approval: Book lovers praised the accuracy of the details, validating the "fan-first" approach to the set design.
